The naming theme for our foals this year is "Candy and Confections", which seemed an appropriate one to follow last year's "Foods and Spices". We spent the winter having fun by adding our name ideas to a list in the barn office. We also yearly enlist help from friends who contribute their ideas by email. The letter "L" was the tough one this year, and we need quite a few names. We will continue in the Hanoverian tradition of naming the foals starting with the first letter of the sire's name. I would get really mixed up if I changed to the Oldenburg tradition of naming fillies using the first letter of the dam's names after 25 years of breeding Hanoverians! My naming theme idea started the first year the Gold Luck foals were born- in 1996. Having a stallion to stand was new for me. I had had mares for many years that I bred to outside stallions and the foals had been named randomly. It seemed like a fun way to keep track of the yearly foal crops. Thirteen years later, I can identify which year a homebred horse was born in by their name. The other naming convention that we use here at Rolling Stone Farm is that the second letter of the name is always "h". This happened because I would name a foal in the spring, and get used to calling them by that name, only to have that name choice denied by the American Hanoverian Society because it was already taken by another horse. Using the silent "h" as the second letter solved this problem. Here's a list of the themes we've used so far:
Exclamatory (eg. Ghotcha, Ghee Whiz)
Cities (eg. Gheneva, Ghaza)
Musical (eg. Ghlissando, Rhavel)
Drinks (eg. Ghlenlivet, Ghuinness Stoudt)
Movie Stars (eg. Gharbo, Ghable)
Countries (eg. Ghreat Britain, Fhrance, Rhussia)
